Next year in 2010 the Soccer World Cup will be played at home, here in South Africa. The world's largest sporting tournament will be making its African debut and the mass of excitement that it will generate has already started. Soccer is big business and there are ample opportunities to make money from it that do not rely on using the trademarked brands that are protected by FIFA. So what can you do?
- Accommodation rentals should soar
- Ancillary activities should boom
- Travel and tourism opportunities abound
There has apparently been an upsurge in interest in renting out accommodation during the world cup. It may only be six or so weeks of tournament but it should be possible to rent out property, especially property that is close to the stadiums for at least two months next year. The rentals charged during this period can be expected to be higher than usual due to the unusual demand. The sponsors and logos of the World Cup are highly protected but that does not mean there are not any opportunities without branding.
Food and entertainment related to the world cup should boom. You don't need to sell World Cup boerie rolls, you will get busted for trademark infringement but a boerie roll is a boerie roll and there will be plenty of takers. Travel and tourism companies should be inundated with requests to get fans to the matches they want to see and the transport and booking arrangements all attract a commission. Even if you expect to just be a spectator, plan your world cup budget now to make sure you get what you want out of it. The World Cup is coming are you prepared?
