I just want to know if I can take life insurance for my mother. She is a low income earner (R1500 pm) and has no matric. Is this permissible by law? My concern is my sisters should she pass on. From: Thuli

A difficult question to answer as we don't work for the insurance companies... I do believe that they would look at it on a case by case basis! The concern is always one of insurable interest. The question we need to ask is: "Could the person who is insuring the life of the other suffer a financial loss if the insured person was to pass away?" If not, then there is no insurable interest! The sisters who are dependent on the mom stand to lose financially whereas Thuli doesn't. A better option would be for the mom to be the owner of the contract - with Thuli as the premium payer - and the sisters as beneficiaries.
