Q:

I'm getting a South African work visa and I am going to move to SA. I would like to open a bank account in SA and transfer money into it from my foreign bank's account. Is it possible to open a bank account without visiting the bank, via the Internet or fax?

A:

Opening a bank account in SA requires client verification and FICA authentication (Financial Intelligence Centre which is a compliance framework and operational capacity which fights crime, money laundering etc) Therefore one would need to be in SA to open a banking account.
