I want to know what would happens if you have a credit card and you ask the bank to deduct money for your credit card payment, but they fail to do so. What happens if you end up in arrears? Especially in a situation where you are working out of town where there are no banks.
In order to have the bank deduct a specified amount from your current account to repay a credit card outstanding balance, you would have had to request the bank to load an APO (automatic payment order). This is a formal request, which is normally part of your application for the credit card, but which can also be loaded at a later stage. You will need to specify the details of the bank account from which the money will be deducted, as well as the timing and the amount. This would usually be on the due date, and at minimum must be 5% outstanding balance (for most credit cards). If your APO is not working for any reason the bank that issued the credit card will start to alert you that your account is in arrears, using sms, e-mail etc. This will give you the opportunity to rectify the matter. Should the bank not have deducted the amount you could request the bank to write off the interests that was accrued for this period. You would have had to ensure however that you did not change your bank account details during this time, and that sufficient money was available in the account to allow the debit order to action. If this was not the case you would remain liable for the interest amount. In either case (whether you or the bank was at fault) you will have to pay the outstanding balance. A further consideration is that during the time that no payment was made it will reflect on your credit profile that you were not repaying a credit card. This could negatively affect your credit record. Should the bank agree that it was due to their error that the APO was not auctioned you should request that they correct this info with the Credit Bureaus as well.
