Stop your car from chowing your salary. Carpools, route planning, and tyre checks all reduce transport costs. Turn careful planning and small checks into big monthly savings.

For many people, the cost of getting around is the second-largest expense after rent or a bond. When petrol prices climb, it feels like an unavoidable tax that’s out of your control. Reducing transport costs by just 15% can free up hundreds of rands.
1. Start a neighbourhood carpool
Driving alone costs the most. By alternating days or splitting the petrol cost with just one other person, you can cut your monthly fuel bill in half. Multiply by the number of seats and your savings grow further. For school runs, coordinate with other parents in your community. This doesn’t just save on petrol, but maintenance costs too.
2. Plan your trips
Every time you start a cold engine, your car uses more fuel to reach its optimal operating temperature. Instead of visiting the shops three times a week, practice trip-chaining – planning one continuous loop that covers all your errands at once.
3. Check your tyres regularly
It sounds minor, but driving on under-inflated tyres is like trying to run through sand – it uses up to 5% more fuel. Make it a habit to check your tyre pressure every time you fill up. It’s an easy, zero-cost way to get more bang for your buck. For more quick fixes, read “Protect your budget from hidden costs with a 10-minute check”.
4. Mix up your commute
If your car is working overtime, maintenance costs can start to add up. Sometimes the smartest way to save is to leave the car at home for longer or traffic-heavy trips. If someone in the household can take a reliable bus or taxi a few times a week, you can drastically cut fuel costs and reduce wear and tear. This can also help extend the life of your engine, keeping one of your most important assets on the road for longer.
