Career Junction has released their quarterly salary survey for the top ten sectors in South Africa. The survey only covers the average salaries for the various jobs in Gauteng, the Western Cape, and Kwa-Zulu Natal.
“It contains up-to-date salary information as well as regional differences in remuneration using actual salary offerings on our website (28,000+ jobs monthly) for the latest measurable period (4th Quarter 2014 and 1st Quarter of 2015),” said Career Junction.
The salaries were split up between skilled workers, and senior workers for each position. Furthermore, each of the ten sectors looks at the most popular jobs within that sector.
The sectors covered are: Engineering, building and construction, warehousing and logistics, information communication technology, design, media and arts, finance, sales, marketing, admin, office and support, and lastly, manufacturing and assembly.
Salaries in Gauteng (GP) were found to be 20% - 30% higher than in the Western Cape (WC), and KwaZulu Natal (KZN).
Highest paid
According to Career Junction, the best paid employees in South Africa are those in Information Communications Technology (ICT), finance, and the engineering fields.
According to the tables, the highest paid job (out of all of the ten sectors) is that of a senior mining engineer, who averages R77 031 across the three provinces.
The WC engineers earn 28% to 29% less, according to the report, than those in KZN and GP.
“Salary offerings for engineers differ dramatically from Gauteng to the Western Cape, where the demand for engineers is significantly lower,” said the report.
In the ICT sector, both the senior business analysts, and the technical and business architects earn the most, with an average of R56 083 a month.
People in KZN earned 20% to 22% less in the ICT sector, than their counterparts in the other two provinces.
In the finance sector a senior chartered accountant earns the most, with R49 596 a month.
“Results indicate that Gauteng pays the best, followed by (in this order) the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, where the demand for labour is considerably lower,” said the report.
Many of the salaries in these sectors stretch to over R45 000 a month.
Lowest paid
The lowest earners, according to the report, are those in admin, office and support, media, and manufacturing and logistics.
Some of these salaries start as low as R5 600 per month.
In the admin, office, and support sector, most salaries do not reach much over R26 000. The results show that GP pays the best in this sector, with the WC paying the worst out of the three.
The lowest paid job in this sector is a skilled teller and cashier, who earns R5 651 a month.
The WC pays the best in the design, media and arts sector. However, the lowest paid position is a skilled TV/ Video/ Movie operator, who earns R9 061 a month.
In the manufacturing and assembly sector, GP comes out tops again, paying the best by 7% compared to the other two provinces.
The lowest paid position in this sector is a skilled plant and system operator, who earns R9 770 a month.
Lastly, in the warehouse and logistics sector, KZN pays the worst of all, by 36%. The lowest paid position in this sector is a skilled dispatcher and receiver who earns R10 627 a month.
