That shapes what a "Bayport loan" is today. The lending product on bayport.co.za is the Bayport Consolidation Loan: you settle several existing debts with one Bayport loan and repay it in a single monthly instalment. You do not choose an amount on a slider as you would with most online lenders. You apply through your employer's relationship with Bayport, and Bayport states that it currently services government employees and selected private-sector companies. If your employer is not on its list, Bayport says it may not be able to assist.
Instalments are deducted from your salary by your employer's payroll department, with a debit order as the fallback if a payroll deduction fails. The interest rate is fixed for the full term, calculated daily and added to the balance once a month. Bayport describes its pricing as "a single admin fee and a preferential interest rate" but does not publish either figure. Your quotation shows the rate, the initiation fee, the monthly service fee and the credit life premium, and every one of those is capped by the National Credit Act.
Credit life insurance is a condition of the loan. You can take Bayport's policy, underwritten by Guardrisk, or provide your own policy with similar cover that Bayport accepts. The cover pays the outstanding balance on death, permanent or temporary disability, retrenchment or dread disease.
Bayport is a registered credit provider (NCRCP 4685) and an authorised financial services provider (FSP 42380). All loans are subject to the National Credit Act, No. 34 of 2005.
Tip: Bayport will never ask you to pay a fee before your loan is paid out. If someone claiming to be from Bayport asks for money upfront, it is a scam. Here is how to identify loan scams before you share any personal details.

The interest cap is set by law, not by Bayport. Unsecured credit is capped at the repo rate plus 21% a year, which moved to 28.25% when the Reserve Bank lifted the repo rate to 7.25% on 25 September 2026. Your rate is fixed when you sign, so a later rate move does not change your instalment.
Cost example
Bayport does not publish a representative example. To show what the numbers can look like, JustMoney worked through an illustrative consolidation of R50,000, with the maximum initiation fee of R1,207.50 added to the loan and a monthly service fee of R69. These are not Bayport quotes, and they exclude the credit life premium.
Scenario | Monthly instalment | Total repaid |
R50,000 over 36 months at 20% a year | R1,972.05 | R70,993.95 |
R50,000 over 60 months at 20% a year | R1,425.69 | R85,541.13 |
R50,000 over 60 months at 28.25% a year (legal maximum) | R1,671.12 | R100,267.18 |
Two things stand out. First, stretching the term is what does most of the work in lowering the instalment: moving from 36 to 60 months at the same rate cuts the monthly payment by about R546 but adds more than R14,500 to the total. Second, the rate you are offered matters as much as the term. At the legal ceiling over five years, the illustrative loan costs about twice what was borrowed.
That is why a lower monthly payment on its own is not proof that consolidation saves you money. Compare the total you will repay Bayport with the total you would still owe on the debts you are settling.
Important notes
Pricing lives in your quotation, not on the website. Bayport publishes no rate, amount, term or fee schedule online, and its contract terms point to the quotation for all of them. Ask for the quotation in writing and read the total amount repayable before you sign.
Payroll deduction has two sides. It means the instalment is paid before your salary reaches your account, so you cannot miss it by accident. It also means the deduction may only stop when the loan is repaid or you leave your employer, and Bayport's contract lists termination of employment as an event of default. If your job situation is uncertain, factor that in.
Credit life is compulsory, but the policy is your choice. If you already hold cover that would settle this debt, you may offer it instead of Bayport's Guardrisk policy, provided Bayport accepts it. Our guide to credit life insurance explains what to compare.
If you fall behind, Bayport must send you a Section 129 notice before it takes legal action, and it reports adverse information to credit bureaus only after giving at least 20 working days' written notice. Call payment arrangements on 087 287 4002 as soon as you know a deduction will fail.
Consolidation is not the same as debt relief. If you cannot meet your current repayments at all, read how debt consolidation differs from debt counselling before you take on a new agreement.
Key features and benefits
1. One instalment instead of several
The consolidation loan settles your existing accounts and replaces them with a single repayment to Bayport. Fewer debit orders and due dates make your month easier to manage, and Bayport says it negotiates settlement discounts with your creditors along the way.
2. Repayments come straight off your salary
Because the instalment is deducted by your employer's payroll, there is no debit order to bounce and no due date to forget. For people who have struggled with missed payments, that structure removes one common cause of arrears.
3. A rate fixed for the full term
Your rate is set once and does not change for the life of the agreement. You can budget the instalment to the rand, and a rising repo rate does not affect what you pay.
4. Settle early with no penalty
Bayport's contract allows you to prepay or settle the full balance at any time, without notice or penalty. If your finances improve, you can clear the loan and stop paying interest.
5. Support that goes beyond the loan
The loan sits inside Bayport Money Solutions, its employee financial wellness programme. That includes free credit health reports, access to financial coaches, and help negotiating with creditors to rescind garnishee orders, administration orders and debt counselling processes. If a garnishee order is already eating into your salary, that last point may matter more than the rate.
6. A regulated lender backed by the GEPF
Bayport is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCRCP 4685) and as a financial services provider (FSP 42380), and its major shareholder is the Government Employees Pension Fund. For a loan deducted from your salary for years, the stability of the lender matters.
Who should consider this loan?
This loan may suit you if you:
Work for government or for a private-sector employer that partners with Bayport.
Are juggling several store cards, personal loans or credit accounts and want one instalment, which is what debt consolidation is designed for.
Have a garnishee or administration order and want help negotiating it away.
Prefer repayments taken from your salary so you cannot miss one.
Want a fixed rate and the option to settle early without penalty.
This loan may not suit you if you:
Are self-employed, or your employer is not on Bayport's list.
Want a cash loan you can apply for on your own and compare instantly, in which case compare personal loans on JustMoney.
Are under debt review, since you may not take on new credit. Our debt review questions answered explains why.
Expect to change jobs soon, given that leaving your employer is an event of default.
Cannot afford your current repayments at all, where debt counselling will serve you better than a new loan.
What to check before you apply
1. Confirm your employer is on Bayport's list
Bayport's application form asks for your employer and whether you are a government employee. If your employer does not appear, Bayport says it may not be able to help, so check this first. Our guide on how to qualify for a consolidation loan covers what lenders look at beyond employment.
2. Compare totals, not just the monthly saving
Bayport's headline is a lower monthly payment. Add up what you still owe on each debt you plan to settle, then compare it with the total amount repayable on Bayport's quotation. Run the new instalment through the JustMoney budget calculator to confirm it fits your month.
3. Know your credit position first
Your rate is set on your own profile. Check your credit score on JustMoney and read our ultimate guide to understanding your credit score so you know what Bayport will see before it quotes.
4. Read the quotation for credit life and fees
Look for three lines on the quotation: the initiation fee, the monthly service fee and the credit life premium. If you already hold cover, ask Bayport what it needs to accept your own policy. And for a refresher on how unsecured loans are priced, read personal loans explained.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Bayport loan?
Bayport's current lending product is the Bayport Consolidation Loan. It settles several of your existing debts and replaces them with one fixed monthly instalment, deducted from your salary through your employer's payroll.
Who qualifies for a Bayport loan?
Bayport says it currently services government employees and staff of selected private-sector companies that partner with it. Every application is subject to a credit check and an affordability assessment under the National Credit Act.
How much can I borrow from Bayport?
Bayport does not publish a minimum or maximum loan amount on its website. Your amount depends on your income, your existing debt and your credit profile, and is set out in your personal quotation. Some comparison sites quote amounts of up to R250,000 over up to 84 months, but Bayport does not confirm these figures on bayport.co.za.
What interest rate does Bayport charge?
Bayport does not publish a rate. It describes its pricing as a preferential interest rate, fixed for the full term. By law, the rate on an unsecured loan cannot exceed the repo rate plus 21%, which is currently 28.25% a year.
How are Bayport loans repaid?
By payroll deduction. Your employer deducts the instalment from your salary on each pay date. If a deduction fails, Bayport may collect by debit order instead.
Is credit life insurance compulsory?
Yes. Credit life is a condition of the loan and covers the outstanding balance on death, permanent or temporary disability, retrenchment or dread disease. You may provide your own policy with similar cover if Bayport accepts it.
Can I settle my Bayport loan early?
Yes. Bayport's contract allows you to prepay or settle at any time without notice or penalty. The settlement amount is the unpaid balance plus interest, fees and charges up to the settlement date. Our article on settling a personal loan early explains how to weigh it up.
What happens if I leave my job?
Payroll deductions may stop when you leave your employer, and Bayport's contract lists termination of employment as an event of default. Contact Bayport before you leave to arrange how the balance will be repaid.
What happens if I miss a payment?
Call Bayport's payment arrangements line on 087 287 4002 straight away. Bayport must send a Section 129 notice before legal action and give at least 20 working days' notice before reporting you to the credit bureaus.
How do I apply for a Bayport loan?

Does Bayport charge upfront fees?
No. Bayport states that it will never ask you to pay upfront fees. Any request for payment before your loan is paid out is a scam.
Is Bayport a registered credit provider?
Yes. Bayport Financial Services 2010 (Pty) Ltd is a registered credit provider under NCRCP 4685 and an authorised financial services provider under FSP 42380.
The bottom line
"Bayport loans" today means the Bayport Consolidation Loan: a single, fixed-rate instalment that replaces several debts and is deducted from your salary through your employer. For government employees and staff of partner companies who are juggling multiple accounts, or dealing with a garnishee order, the structure and the support around it can be useful.
The trade-off is transparency. Bayport publishes no rate, amount or term, so you only see the price once you have a quotation in hand. Treat that quotation as the start of the comparison, not the end: add up what you owe today, check your credit score on JustMoney, run the instalment through the budget calculator, and compare personal loans on JustMoney before you sign.
