Quick summary
Unifi is a fully online South African lender offering short- to medium-term unsecured personal loans. New customers can borrow up to R12,000, and customers who have borrowed and repaid before can access up to R24,000. Repayment terms run from three to nine months, and you can settle early at any time to save on interest.
There are no branches to visit and no paperwork to post. You apply at unifi.credit, choose either Unifi's automated bank-statement retrieval or a manual document upload, pass an affordability and credit check, and authorise a DebiCheck mandate for the monthly debit order. If you use the automated route, the money can reflect in your account within a few hours, and Unifi says payouts often happen within minutes of applying. Manual uploads take up to 24 hours.
Unifi publishes its cost of credit upfront, which is unusual in this part of the market. Its representative example is an R8,000 loan over six months at 3% interest a month, with a R995 initiation fee and a R69 monthly service fee, giving an instalment of R1,730. Unifi quotes an annual percentage rate (APR) range of 95.9% to 121.1%, and states that all fees are VAT inclusive.
Unifi is a registered credit provider with the National Credit Regulator (NCR Reg. No. NCRCP4849). All loans are subject to the National Credit Act, No. 34 of 2005.

Unifi's published rate and fees apply to its representative example. Your own quote depends on your credit profile, the amount you borrow and the term you choose, so ask for your pre-agreement statement and quotation before you sign. Our guide to the maximum prescribed interest rate explains what a lender may legally charge under the National Credit Act.
Cost example
Using Unifi's own published example, an R8,000 loan repaid over six months costs R1,730 a month, or roughly R10,380 in total.
That total is made up of R8,000 in capital, a R995 initiation fee, a R69 monthly service fee for six months (R414), and about R970 in interest at 3% a month on the reducing balance. The credit multiplier is 1.30, you pay back about R1.30 for every R1 borrowed.
Unifi's APR range of 95.9% to 121.1% reflects the total cost including fees, not the interest rate alone. The fixed initiation fee makes up a larger share of the cost on smaller loans and shorter terms, which is why the top of the range is so much higher than the bottom. Borrowing less over a shorter period does not automatically mean a cheaper loan in percentage terms.
Important notes
Fees are regulated under the National Credit Act and Unifi states that its published fees include VAT. Unifi will never ask you for an upfront payment to release a loan, requesting a fee before credit is granted is illegal. The initiation fee is added to your loan agreement, not paid in cash beforehand.
Your instalment is collected by DebiCheck debit order, which you authorise during the application, so make sure the money is in your account on your salary date. If a debit order fails, your account goes into arrears, which is reported to the credit bureaus and will hurt your chances of borrowing again. If you are struggling, contact Unifi on 021 110 0600 before the debit order date rather than after it.
Unifi does not offer debt consolidation loans, does not lend to people under debt review or who are insolvent, and does not lend to people paid weekly or fortnightly, or to the self-employed.
Key features and benefits
1. Up to R12,000 to start, and up to R24,000 once you have repaid
First-time customers can borrow up to R12,000. Once you have taken a Unifi loan and repaid it as agreed, your limit can rise to R24,000. Your actual limit is set by your credit score and affordability assessment, so the advertised maximum is a ceiling rather than a promise.
2. Fully online in about five minutes
There is no branch to visit and no appointment to make. You complete the application on Unifi's website, get an instant decision, and the money is paid directly into your bank account. This suits people who work standard office hours and cannot get to a branch during the day.
3. Money in your account within minutes
If you use Unifi's automatic bank-statement retrieval, the credit and affordability checks run immediately and cash can reflect within a few hours, often within minutes. If you upload your documents manually instead, allow up to 24 hours.
4. Terms of three to nine months, with early settlement
You choose a term from three to nine months, which lets you balance the size of the instalment against the total cost. You can settle the loan early at any time and save on interest, and settlement quotes are available in the My Unifi portal.
5. Fees published upfront
Unifi publishes a full representative example, loan amount, term, instalment, interest rate, initiation fee, monthly service fee and APR range, on its website. Many short-term lenders publish nothing until you have applied, so being able to model the cost before you start is a real advantage.
6. A registered credit provider with two decades behind it
Unifi began as Cobol, a branch-based microfinance business established in 2004, and moved to a fully online model in 2013. It is part of Unifi Africa, which operates in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and is a registered credit provider under NCR Reg. No. NCRCP4849.
Who should consider this loan?
This loan may suit you if you:
Need a smaller unsecured loan of up to R12,000, or up to R24,000 if you have borrowed from Unifi before.
Want the whole process online, with no branch visit and no phone queue.
Need the money the same day, or within a few hours.
Are formally employed, over 20, a South African citizen, and paid a monthly salary into an account at Absa, FNB, Standard Bank, Capitec, Nedbank, African Bank or TymeBank.
Want to see the rate, fees and instalment before you apply rather than after.
Expect to settle early, for example when a bonus lands, and want the interest saving that comes with it.
This loan may not suit you if you:
Need more than R24,000, or a term longer than nine months.
Are self-employed, paid weekly or fortnightly, or under debt review, Unifi does not lend in these cases.
Bank with an institution outside Unifi's list.
Are looking to consolidate existing debts, since Unifi does not offer consolidation, read our debt consolidation guide instead.
Can qualify for a longer-term loan at a lower rate from a bank, which will almost always cost less in total.
Are borrowing to cover other debt repayments, which is a sign to get help rather than more credit.

What to check before you apply
1. Check your credit score
Unifi runs a credit check and an affordability assessment on every application, and your score influences both approval and the amount offered. Check your credit score on JustMoney first, and read our ultimate guide to understanding your credit score so you know what moves the number before a lender sees it.
2. Work out the total cost, not just the instalment
Short-term credit looks affordable month to month and expensive in total. On Unifi's own example, R8,000 becomes about R10,380 over six months. Multiply your instalment by the number of months and compare that figure to the amount you are borrowing. Then check the instalment fits your budget using the JustMoney budget calculator.
3. Confirm what is in your quote
Ask for your pre-agreement statement and quotation before you sign. It must show your interest rate, the initiation fee, the monthly service fee, any credit life insurance premium, your instalment and the total you will repay. Unifi's representative example does not include a credit life premium, so confirm whether one applies to your agreement and, if it does, what it costs. If you are not sure whether you will pass affordability, read how do I know if I qualify for a loan?
4. Compare personal loan options
Unifi competes with several online short-term lenders, and a bank loan over a longer term at a much lower rate can cost far less overall if you qualify. Compare personal loans on JustMoney and read our guide to personal loans explained before you commit.
Frequently asked questions

Unifi quotes an APR range of 95.9% to 121.1%, which includes fees. Your own quote depends on your profile, amount and term.
What documents do I need?

How quickly will I get the money?

Is Unifi a registered credit provider?
Yes. Unifi is registered with the National Credit Regulator under NCR Reg. No. NCRCP4849, and all its lending is governed by the National Credit Act.
The bottom line
Unifi Personal Loans suit formally employed South Africans who need a smaller amount quickly, want the whole process online, and value seeing the rate and fees before applying. The speed is the standout feature: an application takes about five minutes and money can land in your account within minutes of approval. Publishing a full representative example, including the APR range, puts Unifi ahead of most lenders in this bracket on transparency.
The trade-off is cost. At an APR of 95.9% to 121.1%, this is short-term credit priced accordingly, and R8,000 borrowed over six months comes back as roughly R10,380. That is a reasonable price for genuine speed in an emergency, and an expensive one for anything you could plan for or fund another way. Before you apply, check your credit score on JustMoney, run the instalment through the budget calculator, and compare personal loans on JustMoney to see whether a longer-term loan at a lower rate would serve you better.
