Quick summary
Wonga is a fully online South African lender specialising in short-term credit, small amounts, repaid quickly. New customers can borrow up to R5,000 with up to three months to repay. Existing customers who have repaid a loan can access up to R8,000 with up to six months to repay. You choose both the amount and the repayment period on a slider, and Wonga shows the full cost breakdown before you apply.
The application is 100% digital. You need a cellphone number, your South African ID number, your bank account details and your most recent proof of income. Wonga runs a credit and affordability check, verifies your income, and you authorise a DebiCheck mandate for the repayment. Approve that mandate between 8am and 5pm and the money can reflect within 15 minutes.
Wonga charges a maximum interest rate of 5% a month, a R69 monthly service fee (pro-rated for the first 30 days), and an initiation fee set on the National Credit Act scale. Credit life insurance is included in the quote, though you may use your own provider instead. All fees include 15% VAT, and you can settle early with no penalty.
Wonga Online (Pty) Ltd is a registered credit provider (NCR Reg. No. NCRCP12875), a member of Micro Finance South Africa (MFSA), and registered in South Africa under company number 2019/167500/07. All loans are subject to the National Credit Act, No. 34 of 2005.

Wonga's calculator shows your exact interest, fees, insurance premium and total to repay before you apply, so you can model the cost of any amount and term. Our guide to the maximum prescribed interest rate explains the caps a lender must work within under the National Credit Act.
Cost example
The figures below come from Wonga's own calculator, checked on 18 August 2026.
Borrow R2,500 and repay it in a single instalment 38 days later, and you repay R3,192.83. That is R2,500 in capital, a R362.25 initiation fee, R138 in service fees, R179.70 in interest and a R12.88 credit life premium. The credit multiplier is 1.28, you pay back R1.28 for every R1 borrowed.
Take the same R2,500 over three months instead, and you repay three instalments of R1,163.94, or R3,491.82 in total. That is made up of the same R362.25 initiation fee, R236.90 in service fees, R354.03 in interest and a R38.64 credit life premium. The multiplier rises to 1.40.
Two things are worth noticing. First, a longer term costs more in total, because service fees and interest accrue for longer, spreading the repayment makes each instalment smaller but the loan more expensive overall. Second, the initiation fee is the same either way, so it weighs most heavily on the shortest, smallest loans. On the 38-day example above, fees alone are R500.25 on R2,500 borrowed.
Important notes
All fees are regulated under the National Credit Act and Wonga states that its published fees include 15% VAT. The initiation fee is added to your loan agreement rather than paid upfront, and no legitimate lender will ask you to pay a fee before your loan is granted.
Repayment is collected by DebiCheck debit order on the date you agree, so the money must be in your account on that date. Wonga is explicit that missing a repayment is expensive: interest and service fees continue to accrue on the outstanding balance, your bank may charge you for the failed debit order, and if the debt cannot be recovered your account may be handed to an external legal collections partner, adding further costs. A default is also recorded with the credit bureaus and stays on your file for years.
Wonga does not recommend using its loans to manage existing debt, and says so on its own site. If that is why you are borrowing, debt consolidation or free debt counselling will serve you better than a new short-term loan.
The credit life premium is included in your quote but is shown separately from the headline "interest and fees" figure on the calculator, so read the full breakdown rather than the summary line.
Key features and benefits
1. Small amounts, from R500
Wonga lends from R500, which is lower than most personal loan providers will go. If you need a few hundred rand to get to payday, you are not forced to borrow thousands to get it.
2. Cash in as little as 15 minutes
Complete the application before 5pm and approve your DebiCheck mandate between 8am and 5pm, and Wonga says the money can reflect in your account within 15 minutes. There is no branch to visit, no queue and no paperwork to post.
3. You see the full cost before you apply
Move the sliders on Wonga's homepage and the calculator shows your interest, initiation fee, service fees, credit life premium, instalment and total to repay in real time. Very few lenders in this bracket let you model the exact cost before handing over your details.
4. You choose the term, and can repay early with no penalty
You pick both the amount and the repayment period, from a few weeks to three months as a new customer, or up to six months once you have borrowed before. You can settle early at any time with no penalty, which cuts the interest and service fees you pay.
5. Interest capped at 5% a month
Wonga states a maximum monthly interest rate of 5%, which is the National Credit Act ceiling for short-term credit. That does not make the loan cheap in annual terms, but it does mean the rate is capped and disclosed rather than open-ended.
6. A registered credit provider and MFSA member
Wonga Online (Pty) Ltd is registered with the National Credit Regulator under NCRCP12875 and is a member of Micro Finance South Africa. It is a direct lender, so your application is not passed to a panel of third parties. Wonga also runs a free financial literacy platform, The Money Academy.
Who should consider this loan?
This loan may suit you if you:
Need a small amount, from R500 to R5,000, to cover a genuine short-term gap such as an unexpected bill or repair.
Need the money today and can complete the application before 5pm.
Are over 18, have a South African ID number, a bank account and a smartphone or computer.
Have a regular income you can evidence with a recent payslip or bank statement.
Know exactly when you can repay and can commit to that date.
Want to see the full cost of credit before you apply rather than after.
Expect to repay early, for example when your salary lands, and want the interest saving that comes with it.
This loan may not suit you if you:
Need more than R8,000, or a term longer than six months.
Need a longer-term loan for a planned expense such as a car, studies or home improvements, a personal loan over a longer term at a much lower rate will cost far less.
Are borrowing to cover other debt repayments, which Wonga itself advises against.
Are unsure whether you can meet the repayment date, since the cost of missing it is high.
Want revolving credit you can draw on repeatedly, our comparison of a personal loan versus a credit card explains the alternative.
Are under debt review, in which case you may not take on new credit.
What to check before you apply
1. Work out the total cost, not the instalment
Short-term credit always looks manageable per instalment and expensive in total. On Wonga's own figures, R2,500 over three months comes back as R3,491.82, R991.82 to borrow R2,500 for 90 days. Use the calculator to see your exact total, and compare it against the amount you are borrowing before you decide.
2. Check your credit score
Wonga runs a credit and affordability check, and applying leaves a footprint on your file. Check your credit score on JustMoney first so you apply once, in the right place, rather than shopping around and stacking enquiries. Our ultimate guide to understanding your credit score explains what moves the number.
3. Be sure of the repayment date
Your repayment is collected by DebiCheck debit order on the date you choose, so pick a date you are certain the money will be there, usually just after payday. Run the amount through the JustMoney budget calculator to check what is actually left over that month. If you are not sure you will pass affordability, read how do I know if I qualify for a loan?
4. Compare it against a longer-term loan
A short-term loan is the right tool for a genuine emergency and the wrong one for anything you could plan for. Before you commit, compare personal loans on JustMoney and read our guide to personal loans explained, if you qualify for a longer term at a much lower rate, the difference in total cost is substantial.

Interest and service fees keep accruing on your balance, your bank may charge you for the failed debit order, and Wonga's collections team will contact you to arrange a solution. Is Wonga a registered credit provider?
Yes. Wonga Online (Pty) Ltd is registered with the National Credit Regulator under NCR Reg. No. NCRCP12875 and is a member of Micro Finance South Africa. It is registered in South Africa under company number 2019/167500/07.
The bottom line
Wonga Short-Term Loans do one job well: getting a small amount of money into your account fast, with the full cost visible before you commit. Lending from R500, showing every fee on a calculator you can use before you hand over any details, allowing early settlement with no penalty, and paying out in as little as 15 minutes all count in its favour. So does being upfront about what happens if you miss a repayment, and telling customers not to use its loans to manage existing debt.
The cost is what it is. R2,500 over three months comes back as R3,491.82, and R2,500 over 38 days as R3,192.83, a fair price for genuine speed in an emergency, and an expensive one for anything you could have planned or funded another way. Before you apply, check your credit score on JustMoney, run the repayment through the budget calculator, and compare personal loans on JustMoney, if you qualify for a longer term at a lower rate, take it.
