There is a new SMS scam which seems to be only affecting MTN and Vodacom customers. The scam involves notifying customers that they have won a Chevrolet Cruze, when in reality they have not won a car at all.
"MTN is aware of this scam and is currently investigating it. We would like to apologise to those adversely affected," said Eddie Moyce, MTN SA's CEO.
Moyce explained that if there was any competition or promotion with MTN and another company, customers would be made aware of it through various media channels.
"It is standard practise that when MTN runs a promotion or competition, it will raise awareness about such a campaign on a range of media platforms such as but not limited to radio, television, online and newspaper adverts, billboards and at MTN branded stores," said Moyce.
Moyce said that MTN wishes to warn its customers to exercise caution when participating in such promotions.
Example of SMS
So far Justmoney has been able to find two examples of the scam's SMS:
"GMSA! Your Vodacom cell number has been awarded a (Chevrolet Cruze car in 2015 GM Award). Ref No: GM226SA. Call 0765039462, for your claim. Visit: www.gmsa.co.za."
"GMSA! Michael Rocky Lupke, your (sic) won car has been approved. You are required to pay R2,550. For (Registration & Claim Application fee) as required by the (National Lottery Board). This fee is in line with our promotional policy. Call David Fox or Tanya Fourie on 0218392012 for payment instruction."
Customers are warned not to reply to the SMSs.
