Back-to-school expenses are looming large for parents. We consider how to keep the costs manageable.

School-related expenses can seriously stretch parents’ budgets – particularly in the aftermath of festive season spending.
John Manyike, head of financial education at Old Mutual, provides tips on how to contain school expenses at the start of the year; and we consider ways to cut down on uniform costs.
Tip: Plan ahead for school expenses – explore savings and investment options.
Stick to a strict budget in December, keeping January’s expenses in mind, Manyike advises.
Before you head out to replenish school supplies, do an inventory check – you may find that the backpacks and binders you have in stock are good enough for another year, he adds.
Stay away from character-themed products, Manyike warns. “Your children may love having a TV or film character on their lunch box or pencil case, but avoiding them means you’ll pay less.”
He recommends shopping online for back-to-school specials. If you order more than a specific amount, delivery is often free.
“Lastly, start a savings plan in February for your school expenses in 2025,” says Manyike.
Money-savvy parents’ first port of call is their school’s second-hand clothing shop, where items cost considerably less than new alternatives, and most are in excellent condition.
If buying new, shop around for the best prices.
A basic online search indicates that Ackermans offers some cost-effective generic school-uniform options, as follows.
