Spring is supposed to be time for joy and celebration. But today Standard Bank clients were left stranded and upset after they found they could not transact via ATM, internet banking or at point of sale (POS) stations as the bank suffered a technical glitch with its systems.
Many irate customers took to social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to vent their frustrations.
@AwesomeSBU said: “System crash nationawide! Standard Bank ATMs & internet banking offline today. Can’t even swipe!”
@ItsLeeto said: “Worst day! At the till point, got my Standard Bank card, ready to pay. Card declined. Went crazy, only to find out the services were offline.”
Some complained that they had not been properly informed by the bank. @deonheunis said: “All systems go down every so often, but at least keep clients updated #standardbank. No mention of outage on standardbank.co.za.”
Others were more sarcastic. “Well done Standard Bank. You lost everyone’s money…” said @KwaziForce.
According to Funeka Montjane, Standard Bank’s chief executive: personal and business banking, South Africa, services that were impacted by the disruption included ATM functionality, debit and credit card purchases, Internet Banking as well as telephone and APP services.
“Services were restored within two hours following prompt action by Standard Bank’s internal technical team. Standard Bank is investigating the root cause of the system failure,” said the bank in a statement.
